WPPI: My review of fantastic fun

Why hello loves.  The above photos were taken at the Sony Tradeshow booth where my friend Daniel Boswell (@danielboswell) presented for three straight days.  First strip is with my lovely, beautiful, wonderful friend Angel Swanson of Events of Love and Splendor, who I am so proud to say that she is already booked for 2010.  Yes, already. The middle two are with Harrison Long (@hlpstudios) in which he realized he had a remote and wondered if he could just snap photos without a countdown to throw me off and as you can see we had a laugh over it.  The booth ran out of paper so they made me go in by myself so they could have another strip push out the others and so naturally, I goofed off.  The last shot is me with my love blackberry that keeps me alive.

Hello to my new WPPI friends: Dixie Dixon Photography, Skyeblu Photography, filmfotofusion, Lin & Jirsa Photography, David Michael August, and Lindsey Belle. *wave* I missed a few Twitter friends of mine that I really wanted to connected some of which included: Matthew Morgan, Gray Photography, Caroline Tran and Stephanie Fay and Live. Love. Photography, but I guess I will have to see them next year (though two live in the PHX so we’re setting up dates to meet now).  *tear* I drop these names because I assume you may be interested and love their work as well.

A quick list of who I was able to learn from and be inspired by during my time at WPPI: Elizabeth Messina, Audrey Woulard, Kirk Voclain, Jasmine Star, Jared Bauman, Brianna Graham, Lori Nordstrom, and Amber Holritz.  I also picked up a Spyder 3 and ShootSac and was happy to bump into Jessica Claire at her booth and with her mic in hand, she interviewed me on why I was buying one.  We have mutual friends which makes it a rather small, small world.  If I ever find that footage I’ll share it.  I’m planning on totally blinging out my shootsac cover in rhinestones and I’ll be sure to snap a few pics once that project is completed.

My brain is exploding with information, inspiration and my heart is overflowing with the passion I have for photography.  I love my photographer peers.  Everyone is sweet, open, loving, and it’s the coolest thing to be at WPPI surrounded by those who just, get you.  Where it’s safe to “geek speak” about lenses, bags, processing techniques, gadgets, marketing strategies, and more.  I learned that Twitter is one of the best ways to connected with each other, and I high encourage everyone to be on Twitter and have it on your iPhone or Blackberry, since it serves like another form of instant messenger.  And of course if you do, follow me @dianaelizabeth_.

Last but not least, I have to give a big thank you to one of my bests, Rachelle McCray (watch out world, she’s going to be a really big deal real fast, just you see) for accompanying me and being my entourage. I appreciate your support more than you will ever know.

Until next year, I will miss you my wonderful friends.

As for this weekend, I am looking forward to shooting headshots and engagement photos (one of the two is a former Miss Arizona USA!) so stayed tuned for that.  xx, de

WPPI: Jasmine Star and KISS Books

What up from WPPI.  Or more like, I’m up past 1 a.m. in bed munching on a candy apple.  A crazy life I lead when I get to Vegas, let me tell ya.  This is me from today after the WPPI Tradeshow, I stopped by the KISS Books booth (the reason why I’m at WPPI) and was given a shirt and a tickets to the MGM Studio 54 party tomorrow thrown by Pictage and KISS Books.  Co-owner Kevin Swan and his staff wore the red shirts that said “Let me teach you about KISSing” which I thought was adorable.  Mine says, “KISS me, I’m simple.”A cute twist since KISS Books is known for being the simple books and I’m offering clients their awesome albums.  Looking at this picture reminds me that I really need a haircut.

Sunday night I was eating at MGM’s Wolfgang Puck’s when I heard, “Diana?” across the table and looked up to see none other than my fabulous friend Daniel Boswell.  Above is a photo of me with my friend Harrison Long and Daniel Boswell, I’ll call this the talent sandwich.

I’m sure most of you want to hear all about my day and who I saw.  It started at 8 a.m. (I’m serious about this photography thing, no joke) and attended Kirk Voclain‘s course about senior portraits which was hilarious and then headed to the trade show which was amazing to walk the floor of the MGM Convention Center.  I then attended Jared Bauman‘s course about pricing structures to get ahead, which was amazing.

And last but not least and though I was a starving Marvin, I waited in line for everyone’s favorite, Jasmine Star to hear her talk about “Ghetto Fabulous Marketing” and yes, that was the title of her lecture, and it was fabulous.  She is just as funny, wholesome, sweet and inspirational as she is on her blog. I had actually debated if I would go to her class or go to a lighting course in which I tweeted about this dilemma and received a direct message from Jasmine herself:

Um, OK I think I HAD to go see Jasmine.  The most memorable thing is that she would ask for names in the audience and knew that they read and commented her blog and even said that one was from Brazil.  Wow.  Jasmine truly cares and loves her fan base, she visits other people’s websites, blogs, and clearly so, since she took the time to convince me through a quick direct message.  What a beautiful soul she is.

And so, it has been a very long day with the trade show and I left the room at 7 a.m. and here I am finally resting in bed at nearly 2 a.m. to check in with y’all, my lovely blog readers.

Tomorrow’s plan includes walking the tradeshow floor again, possibly buying a few goodies, lunch with Daniel, class with Elizabeth Messina and the MGM Studio 54 Pictage/KISS Party.  xx de

Hello from WPPI 2010: Las Vegas

Why hello y’all! How are you? I have a short break before the secret Fiano party tonight at MGM and so I thought I’d show a photo I took on the drive up to Las Vegas (yes, I pulled off the side of the road and snapped this photo, I just thought the sky looked lovely).

There are 14,000 expected to attend WPPI this week, and it’s really like a spring break for photographers. My first class I attended today was presented by Audrey Woulard who is not only amazing, but hilariously funny and cute. I laughed so many times. Her style is very inspiring and encouraging to me since I too, like her, love photographing children and families in natural light settings. She gave a ton of tips on her favorite portrait lenses, pricing recommendations and how to target the clients who can afford your photography.

I already saw friends Kady Pangburn, Harrison Long, and Trudy Hill here. Made new friends Justin and Pye (from Lin & Jirsa Photography) and Max. We chatted in what I call “geek speak” about lenses and camera bodies (hello Canon 5D Mark II, I so want you).

Tomorrow I have a class picked out for 8 a.m. which probably means me waiting in line before 7 a.m. Looks like it’ll be an early night in Sin City for me. So looking forward to experiencing the Tradeshow floor tomorrow, checking out the women’s Rapid Strap, saying hi to my friend Daniel Boswell at the Sony booth, and hopefully squeezing into Jasmine Star‘s class (room holds 900). It’s been a little crazy with the long lines and getting into classes, which has been a little unfortunate but other than that, it’s been so very awesome and promising.  I am loving every minute of being here of learning, observing, being inspired, and will be ready to push my creativity in the most incredible ways once I return.

Niky: Child model and actor

What are little boys made of?  Frogs and snails and puppy-dogs’ tails, that’s what little boys are made of.

This is Nicky, he’s darling isn’t he? And he certainly knows exactly how to pose for the camera quite naturally since he’s a little actor and child model.

This past weekend my friends Nicole and Jake were wed at the gorgeous Blackstone Country Club in Peoria, Ariz.   Nicole Turner is a former Miss Arizona (Miss America Organization) and Jake is a talented media arts teacher.  They compliment each other in more ways than I can count, and I adore them both individually, and as a couple.

I took their engagement photos a year ago, but not the wedding since I had the duty of being Maid of Honor.  I met Kadie and Joe Pangburn of Pangburn Photography in Tucson, who were the wedding photographers and they were incredible.  As I chased after N’s train during wedding photos, I was excited to watch them in action.  They will also be at WPPI, so I’m starting to feel as if all the “cool kids” are going.

After the wedding rehearsal I was able to get a quick snapshot of the two at the venue.

The hardware.

Here are their enagement photos I took in Scottsdale.

God bless and love to you both.  Enjoy Hawaii! Matthew 19:6.
